The House of Lords EU Energy and Environment Committee has highlighted the threat of plant and animal diseases to the UK’s ecology and economy in a report released on 24th October 2018.

The report also found that invasive 300 different pests non-native to the U.K. were intercepted at the border last year.

The report also states that UK benefit from European intelligence gathering and disease notification systems for tracing the movement of animals and plant. There is a risk that the U.K. will no longer be part of the notification systems post-brexit.

During the 2001 foot and mouth outbreak, the result led to 6 million animals being slaughtered which cost over 8 billion in loss.
