Construction company fined after Director is swept off roof during storm

The roofing operation continued despite 94 mph winds.

02 September 2019

A construction firm and two roofing contractors have been fined £400,000 after one of their directors was swept off a roof during storm Doris, despite several on-site warnings.

The man fell 11m and sustained serious injuries to his pelvis, back and leg during the accident in 2017. Freestanding A-frame barriers and stacks of insulation were also thrown off the roof in the 94 mph winds.

Most work at the site had been suspended due to the weather, but the roof operation continued. An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive revealed that all three businesses had failed to correctly assess the risk such high winds posed to staff working at height.

A representative of the HSE said: “If a suitable safe system of work had been in place prior to the incident, the life-changing injuries that the director sustained could have been prevented.”
