Mental Health in the Workplace

10th October saw World Mental Health Day, but employers should be aware that mental health problems can affect anyone at any time

04 November 2019

Prolonged work-related stress can lead to physical and psychological damage, including depression and anxiety with one in four people in the UK having a mental health problem at some point. Work-related stress can also aggravate pre-existing conditions and may bring on symptoms or make their effects worse.

Work-related stress and mental health issues need to be assessed in order to measure the levels of risk to staff. Where a risk is identified, steps must be taken to remove it or reduce it as far as reasonably practicable. Over 11 million days are lost at work a year because of stress related illness.

Misuse of drugs and alcohol can impact a person’s mental health and employers need to understand the signs of drug and alcohol misuse (or abuse) in order to protect employees’ health, safety and welfare and to manage health and safety risks in the workplace.

If you require any training on Mental Health Awareness, or need HR guidance and support with regards to the misuse of drugs and alcohol, please get in touch.
